This is a happy story,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though don’t be surprised or disappointed if it brings a tear or two to your eyes. It concerns my 88-year-old mother, who lives in a nursing home in Dallas and who’s now among the most present people I’ve ever known. She also happens to have Alzheimer’s Disease; note the word have, rather than suffers from.
Mom enjoys the moment, even if it’s a visit from her son who she carried in her womb for nine months, lived with for 18 years, and bragged about for 25 more, but now doesn’t know from Adam. She thinks I’m either her brother, who just died at 91 (I must have aged poorly); her husband (a corpse for 10 years); or her father (who’d be 118 if he wasn’t dead for 25 years). And I thought I was a pretty lively guy.
During my most recent visit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was kissing and hugging a stuffed animal as if it were a new-born grandchild. I asked Mom if it was her daughter. When your mother has Alzheimer’s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s important to go with her in whatever reality she happens to inhabit at the moment. She said yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the “doll” was her daughter. So we played as if “she” were just that. Mom laughed excitedly and regularly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and asked at least a dozen times, “We’re having a wonderful time, aren’t we?” She was right; we were. I hadn’t laughed like that with my mother since I played with stuffed animals. It was one of the most enjoyable times I remember ever spending with my mother. Yet, if any medical professional were there to judge her competence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it wouldn’t take more than a minute to determine she was incompetent. And certainly insane by our standards as well. It takes some adjustment in your own being to know that your mother is what we used to call mad.
Unlike most of us who are anything but mad, Mom has no past and no future: she resides in an eternal present and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like an innocent child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enjoys it immensely. Clearly, she enjoys it more than any adult I know, with the exception of some gurus I have been privileged enough to have spent some time around. Mom is a child in an 88-year-old wheelchair-bound body. And like a baby, she needs her diapers. It’s ironic how life comes full cycle, as Shakespeare so eloquently described in his seven stages of man speech.
While my heart breaks to see what’s become of the mind of the woman who brought me into the world and brought me up to join it, I appreciate that she often has a merry old time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blithely unaware of her condition. If the dark cloud of Alzheimer’s has a silver lining—as I believe it does--it’s that the greatest suffering takes place among those close to the patient, far more than the patient suffers herself. It’s also that the “patient” has much to teach us. Here are just some of the things that my mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “the patient,” taught me during my most recent visit:
1. Enjoy the present because that’s all that you have,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
2. It doesn’t matter what time it is, because time doesn’t exist.
3. You don’t have to know who people are, or what they do for a living, to have a thoroughly good time with them.
4. Stuffed animals make great playmates and, if necessary, companions or family members.

3) Forgive Yourself and Others - Forgiveness is one of the most important things we can do in life to heal ourselves, let go of negativity, and live a life of peace and fulfillment. Forgiveness has to first start with us. I believe that all judgment is self judgment. When we forgive ourselves, we create the conditions and perspective to forgive others. Forgiveness is one of the many important aspects of life that is often easier said than done. It is something we need to learn about and practice all the time. Sadly, we aren't often taught how to forgive, encouraged to do it in genuine way, and didn't, in most cases, grow up with very good models or examples of how to forgive. One of the best books you can read on this subject is called Forgive For Good, written by my friend and mentor Dr. Fred Luskin, one of the world's leading experts and teachers about the power of forgiveness. This book gives you practical and tangible techniques you can use to forgive anyone and anything. The more willing we are to forgive ourselves and others (and continue to practice this in an on-going way), the more able we'll be to empathize authentically.
Empathy is not sympathy. When we're sympathetic, we often pity someone else, but maintain our distance (physically, mentally, and emotionally) from their feelings or experience. Empathy is more a sense that we can truly understand, relate to, or imagine the depth of another person's emotional state or situation. It implies feeling with a person, rather than feeling sorry for a person. And in some cases that "person" is actually us.
2) Imagine What It's Like For Them - While it can sometimes be difficult for us to "understand" another person's perspective or situation (because we may not agree with them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], haven't been through what they've been through, or don't really want to see it through their eyes), being able to imagine what it must be like for them is an essential aspect of empathy. This is not about condoning inappropriate behavior or justifying other people's actions, however I do believe deep in my heart that no one does or says things that are hurtful to us if they aren't already feeling a real sense of pain themselves and/or haven't been hurt in many ways in their own life. Whatever the situation is, the more willing we are to imagine what it's like for them, the more compassion, understanding, and empathy we'll be able to experience.

- Feeling Threatened - When we feel threatened by another person or a particular situation, it's often hard to empathize. This makes perfect sense from a survival standpoint (i.e. if someone is trying to hurt us, we want to protect ourselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather than have compassion and understanding about where they're coming from). However, we often feel "threatened" based on our own fears, projections, and past experiences - not by what is actually happening in the moment or in a particular relationship or situation. Whether the threat is "real" or "imagined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," when we feel threatened in any way, it often shuts down our ability to experience empathy.
There are a number of things that get in the way of us utilizing and experiencing the power of empathy. Three of the main ones, which are all interrelated, are as follows:

There are many things we can do and practice to increase our ability to feel, experience, and express empathy for others, situations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and ourselves. Becoming more empathetic is one of the best ways we can enhance our relationships, reduce our stress level, and feel good about ourselves and our lives in an authentic way.

- Being Judgmental - Judgments are a part of life, we all must make lots of judgments and decisions on a daily basis (what to wear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what to eat, where to sit, what to watch/listen to/read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what to say, and on and on). Making value judgments (the relative placement of our discernment) is essential to living a healthy life. However, being judgmental is a totally different game. When we're judgmental, we decide that we're "right" and someone else is "wrong." Doing this hurts us and others, cuts us off from those around us, and doesn’t allow us to see alternative options and possibilities. We live in a culture that is obsessed with and passionate about being judgmental. And many of us, myself included, are highly trained in this destructive and damaging "art." When we're being judgmental about another person, group of people, or situation, we significantly diminish our capacity to be empathetic.
- Fear - The root of all this is our fear. Feeling threatened is all about fear. Being judgmental is all about fear. And, not feeling, experiencing, or expressing empathy is also all about fear. There's nothing inherently wrong with fear, it's a natural human emotion - which,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact, has many positive aspects to it, if we're willing to admit it, own it, express it, and move through it. Fear saves our lives and keeps us out of trouble all the time. However, the issue with fear is our denial of it, our secret obsession with it, and our lack of responsibility about it. We deem things, people, or situations to be "scary," when in truth there is nothing in life that is inherently "scary." There are lots of things, people, and situations that cause fear in us - however, we make it about "them" instead of owning that the fear comes from within us. When we allow ourselves to be motivated by fear - which often leads to us defending ourselves against "threats," be judgmental, and more - it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to access the power of empathy.
Where in your life and relationships can you see that feeling threatened, being judgmental,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and experiencing fear stop you from being empathetic? The more willing you are to look at this, acknowledge it, own it, and take responsibility for it (with compassion for yourself), the more able you'll be to expand your capacity for empathy.
Empathy is one of the most important aspects of creating harmonious relationships, reducing stress, and enhancing emotional awareness - yet it can be tricky at times. I consider myself to be quite empathetic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but notice that with certain people (especially those I don't like or agree with and also with myself at times) and in particular situations, my natural ability and desire to empathize can be diminished or almost non-existent.
Here are a few things you can do and think about to become more empathetic:
I also notice that when I feel empathy for others and for myself, I feel a sense of peace, connection, and perspective that I like. And, when there is an absence of empathy in a particular relationship, situation, or in how I'm relating to myself, I often experience stress, disconnection, and negativity. Can you relate?
1) Be Real About How You Feel - When we're willing to get real about how we truly feel and have the courage to be vulnerable about it with ourselves and others, we can so often liberate ourselves from the negativity, projections, and judgments that mask what’s really going on. When we're in a conflict with another person or dealing with someone or something that's challenging for us, being able to admit, own, and express our fear, insecurity, sadness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anger, jealousy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or whatever other "negative" emotions we are experiencing, is one of the best ways for us to move past our defensiveness and authentically address the deeper issues of the situation. Doing this allows us to access empathy for ourselves, the other person or people involved, and even the circumstances of the conflict or challenge itself.
Empathy is a translation of the German term Einfühlung, meaning "to feel as one with." It implies sharing the load, or "walking a mile in someone else's shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," in order to understand that person's perspective.

Well it comes from listening to others and seeing how they act, and listening to how they think you should act.
It comes from being brave enough to wonder why (and how) others your age have already achieved the things that you want to achieve.

It comes from noticing your thoughts - especially when you use the word "can't" in relation to your abilities, your dreams or ambitions.

How can fear of failure be such a big problem to so many people? And why do we all worry so much about failing that we engage in all kinds of self-sabotaging activities - many times subconsciously - just so we do not begin something that we may not successfully complete?
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as children, we slowly start to forget how much we love learning to do new things and replace our eagerness with hesitation when trying something different. And this is especially so if our early 'failures' were rewarded with stern words from our parents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or - worse! - ridicule.
Remember, too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that there is no time like the present...
But first you have to be aware that you are suffering from fear of failure in the first place.
Remember, then, that fear of failure can be overcome by being aware of your fear and then taking appropriate action.

A friend said to me the other day isn't it funny when you are with someone for a long time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you forget to see their good qualities. Compliments when you dress nice or cook a nice dinner were also part of the early relationship. I think we have all said this one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Hurry up we are going to be late. You look fine, let's go."
One of the things I remember the most were the last six years of my wife's battle with cancer. I seem to focus on other couples and their relationships. When in the midst of a trama or crisis your perspective on life will change and you will have different views on many things. For some reasons all those other couples seem to stay with me. One night my wife and I were out with eight to ten other couples from our church whom all were married. I always stayed close to my wife, never knowing when her last day would be. All the women were sitting around talking to their husbands in a negative manner. To me they all seemed like respective,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spiritual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and responsible men. But what I heard was about their faults,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mistakes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and other character flaws. I wanted to speak out and say, give those guys a break and show them love and respect. I am not judging because we all are not perfect. We should all take life a day at a time and love each other like it is our last.
I always told people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before couples go into counseling, they should take individual counseling for themselves for a few months. For the simple reason to see if they love themselves. Then they should sit with their therapist and partner to work things out.
I will end by taking a paragraph out of the book The Good Marriage by Judith S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wallerstein & Sandra Blakeslee....
Many couples seem to think that just as they can't slow down the human aging process, they can't do anything to alter the aging process of marriage. They let the relationship take its "natural course" by happenstance until it threatens to break down, and by then it may be to late.

Professional investors routinely take more than they deserve offering term sheets that are oppressive and serve the interests of the investor much more than the interests of the start-up team. Young entrepreneurs often fall prey to these tactics. It is so common, in fact, that people take it for granted that venture capital or other outside investment will come at great expense. It is important for entrepreneurs to appreciate the extent to which they are being exploited and know their own tolerance for the behavior.
When someone gets more than they deserve they are taking advantage of the other members of the team. Perhaps they are a better negotiator, perhaps they are a better salesperson, perhaps they lied when they made their case or perhaps they intimidate others. Whatever the reason, they have treated others unfairly and damage will be done.
If the individually willfully accepts less than they deserve problems will arise when they see what they could have achieved if they had been more diligent during negotiation. Less Than They Deserve

Those most likely to get taken advantage of are those who don’t have the willingness to walk away from the negotiation and will feel stuck in a bad situation. When a group of people work together towards a common goal they are a team, but when it comes time to negotiate their slice of the equity it’s every man for himself. Individuals naturally act in their self-interest and when the split isn’t clear greed creeps in. Even when individuals have good intentions mistakes will be made. Treating people fairly in a start-up company means giving them a reward that is proportionate to the contributions made relative to others participating in the business. When unfairness exists, it is often difficult (if not impossible) to remedy the situation without stirring up additional problem. There are two directions of unfairness. The first is someone having less than they deserve and the second is someone having more than they deserve. Both can cause irreparable damage to an otherwise healthy relationship, especially as the stakes get higher. In a good start-up, the stakes start out low, but get high (hopefully). Today I'll tell you about a very simple, yet very effective technology you can use. It's a problem-solving, diagnosing, goal-setting kind of device—I call it a technology—but it's just so simple. It consists of four items,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you can remember them by the acronym D'PIE.
The final “E” is Evaluate. You put your plan into action, you implement it, and you will get feedback. And then you evaluate—you've got to have sensual acuity, environmental acuity, and know if it's working or not. If you're not getting the results you wanted or if you're getting unexpected results, then you tinker with it, adjust it—and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course, you'll put it back into action again. You go all the way through it again.
A lot of times people say, "I like to solve the problem once and then be done with it." Well, it just doesn't work that way, because the environment is always changing. Think about if you were, for instance, into computers or software, and you built a complicated software program. The next thing you know it's needing updates, and your competitors are coming along and you've got to update. All technology is improving.
So we go from diagnose,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to plan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to “I”, Implement. Put your plan into action. Now, here's where a lot of people fall down, because procrastination—that's not what that “P” stands for!—is easy for a lot of people. And a lot of people are afraid they'll be judged. And if you're an employee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will be; if you're an entrepreneur, the market will judge you. You'll get results either way, and that's the whole point.
Then, “P”—Plan. And of course, planning is a process of having done your diagnosing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seeing what the problem is, when it's a problem, why it's a problem, what you need to solve,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and what you want to have happen. Now you start connecting the dots between the two ends—where you're at,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and where you want to be. You start evaluating what you need to do in-between. In other words, there's a timeline on a lot of these things.
So just think: you're a modern person, and you can do this forever and ever because of optimization. The best that you can be is what you're looking for.

“D”—Diagnose. Diagnose exactly where you're at, exactly where you want to go.
Evaluation could be a form of diagnosis, and then you're re-planning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you're re-implementing, and then re-evaluating once again.
I call it that because we all want the pie, the whole pie, "d’ pie," and it helps us remember these things in order. And those are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with any goal-setting, problem-solving sequence:
