How do you sleep? Sleep, the beloved time when care is put to rest and angels guard us. Or it would be if I was mistress of a large house in Victorian England and I had people tending to my every need.
I slept better in South Africa, mainly because the days were long and languid and my life consisted of feeding penguins (don't ask) and laughing more.
So I am going to get rid of all of mine today. I am sure that these labour saving devices are keeping me awake at night. Actually, having kept a sleep journal for 2 weeks now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can categorically state that the thing that keeps me awake is stress. A feeling of being beleaguered, blockaded, encircled, alone or defeated. Sometimes I think I understand how Jesus must have felt on that cross, although I know it does not come close.
My trouble with sleep started in earnest when my life got crowded with so many voices and hard places that I found it almost impossible to wind down. I was so wound up in survival mode and with keeping everyone's act together that I lay down like a soldier who knows that he is not safely gathered in. Half awake. One eye on the door.
So what do we need when we feel the nails or the rough wood of life? I have a couple of thoughts. Even Jesus felt completely alone at times, even cut off from His beloved Father. Remember His anguished cry 'Father, Father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], why have you forsaken me?'. Jesus knows what it's like. And He never leaves you or I to darkness. He will watch with us through the night hours.
I am now reading a book called 'Say Goodbye to Insomnia',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a pretty good book written by Dr Gregg Jacobs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a man who knows what he is talking about. Amongst other things Dr Jacobs advises regular exercise, positive thinking and not using your bedroom as an office. Page 106 made me laugh. The page is titled 'How to succeed at Exercise',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], point number 5 on the list is:
Before Jesus was taken,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and knowing what was to come,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], He could be found on His knees amongst the dark shadows of the ancient olive trees surrounded by His closest friends. He asked them to watch with Him. In the end it was too much for them and they fell into an exhausted sleep.

A friend to watch with you. A friend who helps you gather the pieces of your life and put them in the right order. If you are that friend to someone - I salute you. If you need a friend like that - I pray that you will be given one. If you cannot and have not - I commend you to Jesus. He will watch with you through the night hours. As it is, sleep is something that has eluded me through the years. When I was a kid I would keep a radio under my pillow ( before you write and tell me that a large,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], uncomfortable radio under your pillow will prevent sleep, it was a little radio!). So I grew up listening to late night plays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], book adaptations and boxing matches on BBC Radio 2.

This knowledge about adolescent sexual behaviors keeps me aware of the trends among today’s youth and how their actions affect their families. This knowledge is going to allow me to brainstorm possible methods of intervention that would encourage the youth to make healthy decisions. The knowledge I have obtained has encouraged me to be a part of the solution. Solutions will only develop when professionals discover ways to engage the youth in improving their present situations and plan for successful futures.
The United States government gives every citizen equal rights. The government has laws that we must abide by within society. However, moral decisions such as when to engage in sex are not regulated by law. As humans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have the ability to make our own choices. We are responsible for our own actions. I believe that some of the decisions that teenagers make are having a negative effect on families and societies overall.

This research on adolescent sexual behavior keeps mental health professionals abreast to the problems faced by teenagers that are affecting the families. This information can guide professionals as to which therapeutic approach is best to use to address teenage and family concerns. Research assists institutions and agencies in the development of intervention and prevention programs, possible solutions that can address adolescent sexual behavior.
The study revealed that the proportion of sexually experienced youth increased with age for both genders. Among females, 16.3%, 36.8%, and 55.2% of students age 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18 years had ever had intercourse (Lammers et al,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2002). The male percentages were 29.3%, 47%, and 60.2%. The variables associated with non-initiation of sexual intercourse for both genders included dual-parent families, higher SES, residing in rural areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], better school performance, greater religiosity, absence of suicidal thoughts, believing adults or parents cared and higher parental expectations. In all age groups and both genders, high levels of body pride were associated with higher levels of sexual activity.

Due to many adolescents being sexually active, the overall health of families has declined. Wallace and Warner (2002) reports on how the social problem of adolescent sexual activity affects families: “The rise in teenage pregnancy and illegitimacy has contributed to an unprecedented breakdown of the family, the building block of a healthy society. Mothers head 84 percent of all single-parent families in the United States. Further, about 40 percent of children who live in these homes have not seen their father in at least one year. Many of these fathers have abandoned their financial responsibility, leaving largely uneducated, unskilled women dependent upon the welfare system. In 1998, the median family income for two-parent families was more than four times that of families in which the mother never married. Sadly, studies show that children born out-of-wedlock are more likely to repeat the cycle. Unfortunately, teenage parents enter the welfare system and are usually housed in impoverished neighborhoods. I believe that these neighborhoods encourage negative thinking. The negative thinking by families who live in impoverished neighborhoods increases the likelihood that families will remain stuck in poor living conditions. After reading this information on adolescent sexual behavior, I began to have thoughts and questions regarding adolescent sexual activity. I asked myself ‘what are people doing to address this concern’ and ‘where should the intervention start.’ I believe that intervention should involve all immediate family members,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are the parents and siblings of teenagers. Unfortunately, although parents may get involved, I believe the struggle involves the images portrayed by the media. In my opinion, the media tends to glorify sex,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], violence, women, and money. The images shown by the media can affect adolescence way of thinking and their decision making.
